"The Legend of the Sleeping Giant"

HTMLText_3C477760_04AF_8503_419A_28D2D6DB42D2.html =
For this very special inaugural event, the Belize Pantheon Fantastic challenged Belizeans nationwide to reimagine and expand upon the figures and stories that dominate Belizean folklore. Participants read Dr. Harold A. Young's, "The Legend of the Sleeping Giant," a short story chronicling the origin story of the famous "Sleeping Giant" of the Southern Highway, and then got busy producing artworks and other narratives inspired by the world he created. This virtual exhibit you are about to experience is the result of this venture and we hope it inspires you to share, create, and contribute to the ever-expanding Belizean Pantheon of fantastical creatures.

Virtual Exhibit Quick Guide:
To navigate the tour simply click on wherever you'd like to go. To look around click and drag with your mouse. You can also interact with the art by clicking on them. This will allow you to learn more about the works and gain insights from the artists. Enjoy!

Awakening of the Sleeping Giant

by Almira Smith

In the drawing I have displayed we have the sleeping giant leaping into the air, as a joyous human! He is made entirely of soil and has trees and bushes for clothes. Being the legend that he is, he has roots growing all around his legs to his pants. He's truly a man who loves fauna. In the background, you see the actual sleeping giant of Belize being displayed.

Chac Shango

by Diana Ascencio

Now, the primordial Titan, tiller of the Earth who had parted the rivers of Africa and dug out the Oasis in the Sahara desert, who had pushed the glaciers in Europe and raised the Himalaya Mountains contemplated upon his work and marveled in its beauty. He knew that such prowess would consume his very core. The verdant leaves with their extended branches bowed in respect and were lulling him into a deep slumber. His wooden-like skin and lush leaves that covered his indomitable body camouflaged in the landscape of the Earth. His eyes, closing shutters, glimpsed upon a creature he had never seen before, not even in the dizzying heights of the Himalaya Mountains. Its lustrous yellow feathers hypnotized him while its cascading snake-like tail swayed from side to side, creating a sweet symphony that harmonized his surroundings. It summoned Chac Shango to gild a frothy cascade of water plunging into the valley below. This tiny creature, Chac Shango named Mei, as its poise reminded him of a Chinese damsel in waiting. Chac extended his arms and Mei perched in the crevices of his wooden frame. He realized that Mei had been his companion as he voyaged around the world. It was only when he finally gave into this trance that he recognized the sweet melody that had kept his heart beating. Mei was not a fiction of his imagination but his chi that longed to be placed to rest. Till this day, Mei continues to soar across the jungles and hopes to one day sing a melody so pure that it will awaken the Titan into existence once more.

As the legend depicts, this giant was not an ordinary one but the greatest of his kind. He wanted not only to live a normal life but to be known by everyone, be recognized. He went way beyond his imagination. His name is Chac Shango, He existed a long time ago, he wanted to create things on earth which would express his happiness, show his inner beauty and live peacefully on earth. He had these three important materials which he carried along creating these beauties of earth. His Machete, supply bag and his ornate staff. He was filled with surprise wonder, and amazed with the beauty on earth and hoped he would possess a place in it.

Chac Shango visited every part of the earth and in each part he created something. He visited Africa whereby he created the rivers like the Nigeria river and also the great Sahara desert and some beautiful Oasis. He also went to the north of the earth and created the great Mount Everest, and other big mountains. Chac Shango went on his journey and created islands, big and small crossing the Pacific Ocean, he made the Amazon River, the forests the beauty that lives in it, giving life and home for animals and different plants. He made the rocky point. He was able to see all the unique creation and feel the fresh air. He moved to the Caribbean coast where he made our Great Barrier Reef , the fresh of the sea, the fishes and the different mangroves that protect us today from storms. He went on to create here in Belize the twenty rivers that which we know today, an example will be like our Sarstoon River. The rivers described his energy each one showed how he felt. He went on and made the waterfalls the 1000 feet fall, the big rock fall some to mention and lastly he made the soils the flora and fauna. He then was so satisfied and happy with his work and decided take a rest. It is said that no one knows where he rest but we can see in the coast of the South Chac Shango sleeping, which is said to be the “Sleeping giant”. He’s enjoying the nice rich breeze of the Caribbean sea resting till the day he wakes again while our beautiful Belize is flourish with nature. Beauty that is incomparable and at the same time has a mystery a deep meaning and unforgettable experience of beauty beyond words.

Chac Shango

by Melody Alamina

In this piece, Chac Shango is holding his machete that was mentioned in "The Legend of the Sleeping Giant" by Harold A. Young. While thinking of the piece I thought that he might like to keep his machete clean and constantly sharpened. So, here you can see that he is checking the sharpness of his tool in the evening basking in the orange sunlight.

Chak Shango

by Courtney Matus

The sleeping giant is depicted in this artwork. When I imagined making an artistic character of the sleeping giant, I saw a mountain arising from the jungle's depths. I intended his body to resemble the life forms of trees and mountains found in the Rocky Mountains and surrounding forestry of Belize. Belize has a lot of tropical jungle and fauna, which I wanted to show in this digital drawing. As a proud Belizean, I wanted to show off the sleeping giant's splendor.

Le Señuelo

by Melody Alamina

Le Señuelo is yucatec maya for “the lure”. The reason for this name is because of its carnivorous hunting strategy. Le Señuelo hunts by luring in its prey with the corresponding call. For example, if it is hunting a deer, it will mimic the sound of the deer so that it comes closer. When the deer is close enough it will leap from its hiding spot aiming for the head and demobilising it my crushing its skull with its large strong jaws.

Le Señuelo is also a semi-aquatic creature commonly spotted swimming in creeks, cave pools, and rivers. Le Señuelos are frequently seen in packs of 5 or more, it is estimated that they can be in herds as big as 50+. They have bioluminescent markings located on the fur resembling ribs on the sids of their chest along with the tip of their tails also being bioluminescent. When in hunting mode in water the creature's eyes resemble a shark and roll to the back revealing only eye whites. They shave their tusks and horns like deer/elk to not inhibit hunting and swimming. While it appears Señuelos can climb trees with their hand like paws, they actually fear being in too high places that seem unsafe/unstable.

Maia Shango

by Jazanni Rodriguez

Maia use to devote her life to keeping the beauty of Nature just like her ancestors. She was gifted with the power to bring back life to dead plants, trees, and flowers. Because of her gift she was physically strong, so strong she could move mountains, which also made her powerful. However, one day something happened which Maia didn't like one bit and it left her with a lot of hatred and a shattered heart. From that day, instead of nurturing the Earth, she began to destroy it.

Mystical Creatures in the Jewel

by Adia S. Viltz

Chac Shango was a magnificent giant who loved the entire world. He visited several places on earth and was amazed by all the beauty, but he never considered any of them a place that he could call his home. To him, his home would be more beautiful than any star in the sky, more peaceful than sleeping while it’s raining outside, and overall a place that he instantly feels drawn to. Chac Shango traveled everywhere on earth and was beginning to think that he would never find a home until he came to Belize. Here, it was serene, alluring, and he fell in love at first sight. He exclaimed excitedly, “This is it, this is the Jewel!” Chac Shango was extremely thrilled that he finally found his home. It was important to him that he kept it protected. He knew that he could not do this on his own so he used his magical powers to create nature creatures. Their special powers would help him protect Belize, his home.

Firstly, he created the Aqua creatures. They made sure that the water was always fresh and clean. The Coco creatures looked after the coconut trees. The Maya Mountain creatures guarded the land from high above. The Orange creatures provided citrus all over the land. The Coral creatures protected the coastline from any dangers outside of the barrier reef. The Floral creatures provided the land with even more beauty. The Rocky creatures helped support many waterfalls in the land. The Leafy creatures provided shade from the hot sun. Lastly, the Tree Trunk creatures allowed the trees to stand majestic and tall, for far as the eyes can see. After Chac Shango made all of those amazing creatures, he went over to the impressive Maya Mountains and laid down to rest knowing that his Jewel will always be in good hands for years to come.

SHANGO

by Abdel Valdovinos

Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, was the son of Yemaja and Olouron. Shango was a very rebellious person, the youngest child, and was considered the most handsome.

One day, Shango was doing his king's labor with all the confidence and demanding power that he possessed as king when his siblings together with the villagers believed that he was taking too many advantages over them and being selfish. Shango didn’t listen to them and instead said that they need to understand that he is the king and that this was his kingdom. Their siblings tried to make him reflect that he needed to help his people not scare them. As a result, Shango got mad and decided to begin a war with his siblings and end up burning them down. He used that example to intimidate and threaten his people. After a while he suddenly sees his sibling coming up the hill; he was baffled and didn’t know what to say. He had forgotten that they all have been blessed by the source of fire and he can’t kill them with fire. He was embarrassed because he had used them as examples for the people. He felt too ashamed that he ran away with all the repentance and a broken heart. The gods of the orisha saw that he had gotten a lesson so they decided to select him to join them to be a god. Now Shango, the god of thunder and lightning, is the protector of the forest treasures and ensures justice for all humans. He never lost his sense of humor in pranks, drums, and his love for dancing. It is now believed that he is the protector of the Sleeping Giant here in our jewel Belize.

Shango

by Abdel Valdovinos

Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, was once a human king. He ruled over the kingdom of Oyo and was said to revel in the mystic arts. According to the legends, he went to the top of a mountain one day to experiment with potions he had made with the intent to draw lightning and thunder from the sky. The womanizer’s bad aim resulted in the striking of his palace with lightning so strong it killed many of his wives and kids. Remorseful, Shango exiled himself to the woods where he would later emerge as a great Orisha (Yoruban God/Deity).

The great Shango now lives above the palms in his cloaks of red and white. The red is said to symbolize virility, music, and passion. While the white is said to symbolize being a descendant of the Obatalases of Yoruba. His worshipers please him with offerings of meals prepared with sheep or chicken, as well as bananas or red apples. He rules over Mahogany and Pine and is also said to be associated with war and drums. The impression of violence is not to be assumed; however, here is a deity embodying a free spirit. The Orisha with the double-edged ax is a lover of pranks and jokes. Coupled with his appeal for parties, drinks, and drums, his phobia of death and nothingness is not so absurd. He is raw passion waiting to be manifested through any outlet that allows him. Whether this is war, celebrations, seduction, Shango is the deity of the forwarding movement. He punishes lying, stealing, and poisoning with the swiftness of lightning, due to them being the downfall of his human life.

In my artwork, we can observe a celebration together with the palm trees, his ax, drums, dance, thunder, his name up in the sky symbolizing that he is a god. His crown has flames and the curls that he has on his crown are a symbol of courage. I also inserted our jewel, the sleeping giant at the back.

Sleeping Giant

by Ymaneli Aldana

My painting is some what of more of a realistic view of what the beautiful Sleeping Giant mountain is. My reference photo was obtained from google. To me this would be considered as the view that best depicts the Sleeping Giant. On the right-hand side, we can see a face like structure that would be the face of the sleeping giant. It seems as though the giant is lying flat on its back looking up towards the sky. I did my best trying to recreate the exact shape of how the mountain is viewed from this angle. In front of the mountain, down below has trees which is seen from a distance. To add a bit of colour to all that green I decided to include Belize’s national bird soaring over the land. For the sky, I decided to go with a plain blue sky with clouds instead of a dramatic coloured sky. All of this is done on a canvas that was hand-made by me.

The legend of the Sleeping Giant has it that “Chac Shango” longed for a place of his own. He came from far and was beckoned by Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean coast. The ability of creating rivers and falls were possessions of “Chac Shango”. It is said that when he is tired and at rest that the waters are still, but when he is up and energized then so the water becomes.

He cares for the Flora and Fauna. As far as we know, he is still resting. Some say that when travelling west of Belize, 20 miles from the coast, there you can see him sleeping near Rockville. Others say that he rests in the western mountains where the cooler breeze keep him lulled in a deep sleep. Legend has it that he keeps nourishing his home, Belize, while the vegetation protects him.

T'u'ul Cristal and Chac Shango

by Elissa Leiva

In the depths of the forest, near waterfalls, tree trunks, and cave mouths, there is always a shimmer to be seen; a creature created by the world-roaming mighty giant, Chac Shango. T'u'ul Cristal, Chac Shango's traveling companion, has a form similar to a rabbit, with pink fur and pointy crystal spikes down its back. Because of the aforementioned characteristics its name T’u’ul Cristal means crystal rabbit. However, its unusual appearance isn't the only thing that makes it unique. The physical strength of T'u'ul Cristal is incredible. With jumps as high as a mountain and astonishing speed, crossing a forest in the blink of an eye. Chac Shangos' companion, T'u'ul Cristal, was always by his side. As Chac Shango lies as Belize's sleeping
giant, T'u'ul Cristal wanders and rests beside him forever.

This faithful companion possesses mystical abilities, such as the power to create gems that sparkle brighter than any regular jewel. It is also able to conjure water from its surroundings and purify and heal the surrounding flora and fauna. Any water purified by the T'u'ul Cristal is crystal clear and has lovely hues of blue and green, hence the splendor of the pools at the entrance of caves or at the bottom of waterfalls. However, it can only be seen from afar, surrounded by wildlife since, as docile as it is, it avoids humans because they destroy the local flora and fauna. So if you are ever near the Sleeping Giant and see a glimmer from afar, it may be T'u'ul Cristal wandering about his friend's sleeping form.

The Great Chac Shango

by Samir Habet

I chose to illustrate Chac Shango. In this piece he is using his machete slicing away, scattering islands, large and small, across the Pacific Ocean to remind him of a starry night sky. He huddled some islands into archipelagos that offered safety while others rested alone like beacons for weary travelers. His ornate staff summons energy from nature that gives him the strength while his razor-sharp machete does the rest. In the process he collects debris and stores it in his supply bag for later use. Chac Shango has unlimited power but it resides in his ornate staff that obtains it from nature and without it he is powerless. Chac shango is all about nature and preserving its resources, a kind hearted but ruthless protector that will rain down on anyone who hurts the forests and the animals that live in it.

The Legend Of The Sleeping Giant

by Harold A. Young

In a long-forgotten time, there was a giant named Chac Shango [Chaak Shayngo (Kriol)] who became the greatest of his kin. This is a part of his legend. Like his ancestors, he dedicated his life to the beauty, happiness, and harmony of the earth. With his ornate staff, supply bag, and a machete, Chac Shango traveled all over the world carrying on the work of his ancestors. He toiled contributing to the world we know today, he also marveled at all the beauty and hoped that one day he would have a place of his own.

In Africa, Chac Shango cut paths for the Nile, the Niger, the Congo, and the Zambezi Rivers that water the expanses of forests and rolling plains teeming with life. To enhance the beautiful sand dunes of the Sahara Desert, he dug wells bringing waters that nurture life in the oases.

Chac Shango pushed the glaciers to create the fjords of northern Europe. The fjords filled with cold clear water refreshed him for adventures ahead.

Chac Shango raised the Himalaya Mountains to their dizzying heights and named the top of the world for various individuals - Sagarmāthā (Nepali), Chomolungma (Tibetan), Qomolangma (Chinese), and Mount Everest (English). He glided along with its glaciers, jumped off the plateaus, and landed in the wide expanses of Asia that took him to the Pacific Ocean.

Chac Shango scattered islands, large and small, across the Pacific Ocean to remind him of a starry night sky. He huddled some islands into archipelagos that offered safety while others rested alone like beacons for weary travelers.
He sketched the Amazon River and drew its many branches to drain the Andes Mountains into the Amazon Basin of South America. The Amazon waters, whether clear and shallow or muddy and deep, nourished the land and life.

In North America Chac Shango pushed up the sharp Rocky Mountains that wind their way south tapering off with the Sierra Madre. From the highest peaks, Chac Shango could see the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He marveled at the distances traveled and was satisfied with the beauty that evolved along with his works.
When Chac Shango came upon the Yucatan Peninsula, he was beckoned by a strip of land on the Caribbean coast. It was nondescript compared to the majesty he had experienced before, yet he was drawn to the peace and tranquility of the land.

In the serenity, he rested and decided to make this land his home and to furnish it with some of the wonders he had seen during his travels. He loved the land and wanted to protect the land from the Atlanta Ocean’s storms.

First, he pulled up the bottom of the Caribbean sea and created a barrier reef dotted with cayes. He then planted Red, Black, White, and Buttonwood Mangroves to protect the lowest lands along the coast.

Second, Chac Chango molded the mountains with graceful slopes and jagged peaks delicately forming the Cockscomb Range that appears blue from the coast.
Third, he chiseled paths for 20 rivers and etched many branches. Starting in the far north with the Rio Hondo, he fashioned paths for the New River, Northern River, Macal River, Rio Mopan, Belize River, Sibun River, Mullens River, Northern Stann Creek River, Sittee River, Sennis River, Monkey River, Golden Stream, Middle River, Temash River and ending with the Sarstoon River in the south.

The rivers reflected his energy. When he was tired the rivers became calm and slow-moving, when he was fresh the rivers became rapids or the cascading waterfalls we now know as: Garbutt’s Falls, Hidden Valley Falls, La Clarissa Falls, Five Sisters Falls, Bocawina Falls, Davis Falls, Rio Blanco Falls, Maya King Falls, San Antonio Falls, Butterfly Falls, Big Rock Falls, Mayflower Falls, Antelope Falls and the grandest of all - Thousand Foot Falls (it is over 1,600 feet).

Fourth, he stretched flatlands from the mountains to the sea include rich agricultural soil, ridge lands, forest, and marshland to support wide varieties of flora and fauna.
As he looked at his handiwork, Chac Shango was pleased but he was tired. Lulled by the hues and breezes of the Caribbean Sea, Chac Shango decided to take a nap. Today, as far as we know, he is still resting. No one knows precisely where he decided to rest. Some say if you are traveling west about 20 miles from the coast, look south and you can still see Chac Shango sleeping near Rockville. If here, he is enjoying the warm Caribbean breezes that waft between the coast and the mountains in the west. Others believe that he rests in the western mountains where the cooler breezes keep him lulled in a deep sleep.

While he sleeps, legend has it that the vegetation protects him. Nature flourishes in Belize and the diverse terrain of mountains, valleys, high plateaus, lowlands, swamps, fertile land, rivers, lagoons, and sea are inhabited by strange and wondrous creatures, ghouls, and specters. Some are rivals and stalk and taunt each other for supremacy. Others merely preen and strut to protect their lairs and other mysterious spaces they inhabit. None can be fully understood, nor should their powers be underestimated. Their origins were masked in mystery, their lives unfolded, and their lore nurtured by deeds and memory.

The sleeping giant is a constant reminder of the thought and love that went into the creation of this special corner of the world. In the meantime, a pantheon of inhabitants rules the land until Chac Shango awakens.

The Legend of Chac Shango

by Cameron Tillett

Humanity has faced its fair share of disasters. From natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes to man-made problems like global warming, the world has been through it all. One thing that we should be thankful for is that the demons of the underworld are no longer stepping onto the surface and wreaking havoc. The man we should thank for solving this problem is none other than Chac Shango, we know him as the Sleeping Giant.

Our story begins at the birth of Shango. As the child grew older, news spread around the villages of his increased strength. By sixteen, the young Shango could carry both his mother and father seated on his shoulders. With this superhuman ability, the Ahaw (or ruler) looked at him and saw a fierce warrior to command his army. Little did he know that while Shango held immense power, he much preferred farming and tending animals.

This would be a great mistake as Shango showed much cowardice on the battlefield, afraid to attack others and defend his posts. During one skirmish against a rival tribe, the troops faced a barrage of arrows raining from the sky. One of these arrows hit Shango in the leg causing him to bleed out. The war chief and other men ran off leaving the injured Shango behind. As the enemies approached all hope of making it out alive seemed lost. That was until a jaguar sprung out from the forest and snarled at the enemy forces. The jaguar licked the wound of Shango as the warriors looked on in confusion, they thought that Shango would be eaten. Instead, the wound healed magically and the jaguar stood up on its hind legs, transforming into an elderly woman. The sight caused the enemy warriors to drop their weapons and run back to their village. They knew that they were in front of Ixchel, the jaguar goddess.

Ixchel knew of Shango’s strength, but admired how much he cared for the nature around him. As a reward for his gentleness, Ixchel granted him superhuman durability to make him impervious to the weapons of man. With this gift, Ixchel had but one request. Demons from the underworld were waging war on the gods. With Shango’s strength and newfound ability, he was tasked with fighting alongside Chac, the rain god, to protect the land that he loved so much.

It was here that Shango had finally proved himself to be competent in battle. After defending the surface, Chac himself gave Shango the title of “Chac Shango” calling his strength near-equal to that of the gods. The hero decided to become a protector from then on, laying down and resting. He’s been sleeping for so long that a mountain has grown on top of him. This mountain can be seen by Belizeans driving down to Stann Creek. It is said that if the demons ever rise up again, Chac Shango will awaken and do battle with them again.

Chac Shango

by Diana Ascencio

When the deer is close enough it will leap from its hiding spot aiming for the head and demobilising it by crushing its skull with its large strong jaws.

For the sky I decided to go with a plain blue sky with clouds instead of a dramatic coloured sky.
